DEFENDING CHAMPION WEEKS BACK IN THE CLASSIC ADELAIDE LEAD

DEFENDING champion Kevin Weeks and his 1974 Porsche took the outright lead at the halfway point in the Classic Adelaide rally after a simple part failure ended a potential event-winning run by Holden rival Steve Glenney today.

Weeks and co-driver Bec Crunkhorn, who had been running second to Glenney almost since yesterday’s start, assumed the lead on the sixth of eight closed-road special stages run in the Fleurieu region.

They hold a comfortable lead of almost two minutes over South Australian Porsche crew Hamish Gibson and Ben Scott, in a 1980 HDT Holden Commodore.

Roger Paterson and Paul Whatnell, in a car similar to Weeks’, are third.

Discussion in the Classic Adelaide forums.

Gary Tierney (driver) and David Carra (navigator) have been tragically killed near Forreston in the Hills during the Classic Adelaide car rally event, after their 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RS left the road and hit a tree.

They were travelling on Norseworthy Road in Forreston near Gumeracha just after 3:30pm, when the car left the track and smashed into a tree, killing both the driver and passenger.

Mr Tierney was a highly-rated tarmac rally competitor and the pair took third place in their Porsche in Targa West, near Perth, in late August.

One of the good things about insuring with Shannons is that they covered the car if used in the non-competitive sections of CA. No longer. Now Racing cover has to be applied for – don’t know what this costs yet.

WEEKS AND CRUNKHORN DECLARED CLASSIC ADELAIDE WINNERS AFTER SUCCESSFUL APPEAL

PORSCHE driver Kevin Weeks has been declared winner of the 2008 Classic Adelaide tarmac rally after an appeal hearing last night.

The ruling of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Tribunal resulted in Weeks and co-driver Bec Crunkhorn winning the event by 7.3 seconds, reversing the original provisional result that had given a 2.8 sec. victory to fellow Porsche crew Bill Pye and Grant Geelan when the rally finished on 23 November.

Pye finally named Classic Adelaide champion

PORSCHE driver Bill Pye was finally crowned winner of the Classic Adelaide rally ahead of SA driver Kevin Weeks last night, after six hours of confusion and protests over the final result.

Former V8 Supercar driver Jim Richards jumped into third place after the cars of Ian Wilson and Tim Possingham, in a Triumph and Nissan respectively, were excluded after failing post-event scrutineering.

Pye was awarded the win after the derived time given to Weeks – calculated by timing staff using a set formula – left Weeks just 2.8 seconds short of a back-to-back win, although a protest from Weeks is expected.

Pye scores dramatic Classic Adelaide win after Weeks’s costly sporting act

THE 2008 Classic Adelaide finished in extraordinary circumstances with Porsche driver Bill Pye winning the outright Late Classic category after an act of sportsmanship cost Kevin Weeks almost certain victory today.

Weeks, the 2007 winner with co–driver Bec Crunkhorn, finished an agonising 2.8 seconds behind Pye after he had dominated four days and more than 250 kilometres of special-stage racing.

He was closing on a win when he followed rallying protocol and stopped to assist another competitor who had run off the road on the second-last stage of the event, Clarendon.
