When the Italian police unveiled their state-of-the-art Lamborghini patrol cars, they cannot have been short of volunteers itching to take the supercars in pursuit of speeding criminals.

A team of elite drivers was trained to chase down speeding motorists and deliver urgently-needed transplant organs in the futuristic vehicles, capable of reaching more than 200mph.

What they apparently were not prepared for was a distracted motorist who pulled out of a petrol station without looking.

Today, a bandaged and bruised police driver may have had a tough time explaining how he managed to write off one of the force’s prized Lamborghinis when he rammed it so hard into a line of parked cars that one of the stationary vehicles ended up on the police car’s roof.

The 458 Italia is the latest incarnation of the mid-rear engined berlinetta and will be unveiled at the next Frankfurt Motor Show

Maranello, July 28th 2009 – While it’s true that every Ferrari is innovative by definition, it’s equally true that in the course of the Prancing Horse’s history, certain cars have marked a genuine departure from the current range. This is very much the case with the Ferrari 458 Italia, which is a massive leap forward from the company’s previous mid-rear engined sports cars.

Ferrari is pleased to announce the launch of the new “With You” roadside assistance service to be provided free of charge to owners of all Prancing Horse cars built since 1947 and not covered by either existing factory or POWER warranties.

Lotus has struck a deal with car rental company Hertz to allow its cars to be hired in Italy.

Lotus Elise SCs, which come in Hertz’s trademark yellow and have a customised interior, will be available from the middle of July.

PARIS (Reuters) – Luxury sports carmaker Lamborghini sees no recovery in its markets until 2011 after a 30 percent drop in sales in the first five months of this year, Chief Executive Stephan Winkelmann said on Wednesday.

Still, first-half figures would be positive, and the company, based in Sant’Agata Bolognese in central Italy, would achieve a full-year pre-tax profit, Winkelmann told the Reuters Global Luxury Summit.

“We could stay profitable with sales that are dropping at 40 percent (in 2009). We are foreseeing a scenario that is staying on the same level next year and coming back in 2011,” he said. “I’m prepared to face another tough year in 2010.”

When Lamborghini unveiled the Estoque Concept car last fall, it suggested, without providing any details, that a V8 hybrid version of the 4-door supercar was under consideration. Now, the exclusive Italian automaker has announced it will be developing a hybrid system for future models. Yet, still, the announcement comes with few details.

Psst, want a fake Ferrari?

ITALIANS are used to buying bogus Gucci bags or Rolex watches to look stylish but police found a new height of craftsmanship and cunning when they broke up a ring selling fake Ferrari cars for a fraction of the real price.

Police accused 15 people of building the blood red sports cars and selling them to car fanatics on a budget, most of whom knew they were buying a counterfeit classic.
