YOUNG men commonly feel speeding is okay, but only if they are the one driving, a road safety expert says.
Soames Job, director of the New South Wales Centre for Road Safety, told a Sydney audience the finding was revealed in new research examining the attitudes of NSW drivers towards speeding.
Speaking at the Road Safety Research, Policing and Education Conference, Mr Job said speed was by far the biggest single behavioural factor in serious crashes on the state’s roads.

$15m luxury car scam: Dealer arrested
A LUXURY car dealer has been arrested over an alleged $15 million fraud involving dozens of cars including Bentleys, Porsches, Lamborghinis and Ferraris.
Sid Khoury, who owned The European Car Specialist in Croydon until its collapse in April, was charged with 24 fraud-related offences by Burwood detectives yesterday following a seven-month investigation.
Two other men, Danny Bayeh, 35, and Najib Nehme, 32, were also charged, each on 18 counts related to fraud.

$50m Victoria speed camera blitz aimed to lower road carnage
LEADFOOT motorists face a massive crackdown, with a phalanx of extra fixed and mobile speed cameras to be deployed within weeks.
In the biggest expansion of Victoria’s speed-trap network since the late 1980s, 31 new fixed cameras will be erected and another 22 existing sites upgraded.
And mobile cameras will be snapping away for an extra 3000 hours a month a 50 per cent increase on current hours.

A PERTH motoring writer has been nabbed allegedly doing twice the speed limit in a rare Ferrari worth nearly $500,000.
Police have impounded the rare Ferrari California being driven by Financial Review motoring writer Rod Easdown.

Minister for Roads Michael Daley announced the new demerit point scheme would be introduced on 1 July 2009 to make the system fairer for motorists and our roads safer for the entire community.
Mr Daley said the RTA had worked in close conjunction with the NSW Police and the State Debt Recovery Office to introduce the new system as quickly as possible.
“When I announced the new system in March of this year, I asked the RTA to make the changes to the demerit point system their number one priority,” he said.
“I’m pleased to announce today that the new demerit point will be introduced on 1 July, two months ahead of schedule.
