A classic piece of the past makes history again.
Heritage Plates were originally issued between 1932 and 1939 by the then Motor Registration Branch. These plates ranged from plate number 1 up to 285,000. From 1939, Heritage Plates were discontinued and replaced with machine stamped plates with an alpha-numeric series.
Heritage Plates are handmade with heavy gauge metal, with white embossed numbers and coated with black and white vitreous enamel. Each character is manually hand etched, the plate is oven baked to fuse the Vitreous (Glass Beads) at 900 degrees C, which melts the glass that then flows to make a high gloss and durable surface.
Given the handmade nature of Heritage Plates, each plate is one of a kind and will differ slightly from one another and from pictures. Individuality and small inconsistencies are an integral part of their character.

With the SA Number Plate auction coming up soon, here’s a bonus piece of interesting literature from “The Great Plate Auction” in 1985 – back when Adelaide was about to stage it’s first F1GP.

I recently came across some plate details from the “The Great Plate Auction” of 1985. I believe this auction was one of the first mass releases by the SA Government of numeric, jubilee and classic name series. The sale consisted of 329 lots, being some 400+ plates and was conducted by Jackman & Treloar on the 10th of October 1985.
I have a copy for auction book and it is quite interesting to see what was released at this time. Here is a list of some of the plates that were up for sale with final prices ranging from $200 to $11,000:

Public Auction for Numeric number plates
The Registrar of Motor Vehicles has called a public auction for the sale of 40 Numeric number plates.
Numeric number plates include South Australia’s original number plates issued from 1906 to 1966 from the number 1 to 599 999 and the additional series 600 000 to 999 999.

VicRoads wishes to advise that due to a court injunction made yesterday afternoon by the Federal Court of Australia, VicRoads are unable, at this time, to sell the VSeries plates as previously advertised.

For the first time since 1984, VicRoads will hold a Premium Number Plate Auction at the Dutton’s Showroom in South Yarra on Thursday 6th March. Expecting to fetch record crowds and prices, VicRoads will unveil the new series number plate, the VSeries which has never before been released in Victoria. In addition to this they will also be auctioning high demand Heritage Plates and Signature Plates.
Coinciding with the Melbourne Motor Show, the event will see a total of 60 plates auctioned, including 20 of the most desirable plates for the VSeries, Heritage and Signature plates.
