As I said.

$20,000 is the cost for a professional compliance.

Even at $7,000 it is far better not to use a raw and personal import.
May the Horse be with you....

Yes and you also have to prove that you are coming back here to live, not just for a holiday.

Or prove that you owned it over there for some time, and that you already live here now, and want to bring it over.

Which is what I did with my boxer.

^^^ exactly. And personal imports getting rego today does not mean that it will automatically have rego tomorrow.
I've known of a few cars imported as personal imports that were left for more than 3 months with expired rego not being able to get rego again... All have been exported to the UK or NZ or have become race cars.  Personal imports have extremely low chances of finding insurance. Not to mention they are impossible to get rid of once you get sick of the car.

I was offered a black 2009 quatroporte personal import a couple of years ago for less than $40k, equivalent cars then were asking well over $180k. Took a long time to find a buyer. I'm not interested in things that are longer than the QM2 and Titanic combined ;)

You'd have to have rocks for brains to PI a car that can get RAWS, even if you don't intend on selling it in the future. RAWS compliance just makes your life easier later on.
You can say I'm wrong, but my garage doesn't agree with that statement!!!

There are ways around the 12 month ownership rule. Well a few years ago there was, not sure if this can still be done now though?

Once a car has had Rego, all it needs is a roadworthy to get re regod if it expires.

Or wait until it can get club permit at 25 years old.

Also I'm only referring to NSW, no idea if other states vary on the issue in this regards. Qld and WA seem to be more easy going towards imports/rego of all types
