was thinking today, i've noticed almost all people riding scooters wear regular clothing, yet motorbike riders wear leathers or special jackets and jeans....
assuming your going to hit the ground/car at the same speed, do you think scooterers are a bit delusional to the inherent danger.

I've seen equal amounts of either wearing either... i'd say they know the score, and make their choice.

It SHOULD be made illegal/points/finable though.

Why shoud my tax dollar be spent fixing up idiots who skin themselves when they fall off 'cos they were to tight/stupid to get leathers?

Imo the problem with most scooter riders is they haven't had formal rider safe training.

Because most scooters can be ridden on a c license not requiring r. For as long as I recall to get r you have needed to show competency. Not counting old guys who just had their license stamped.

And part of rider safe they tell you it hurts when you come off and to dress for the slide and hope it don't come.

I would say based on my experience alone, the proportion of scooter riders who wear little to no gear is higher than bike riders, but both are still pretty bad.

I would also GUESS that a higher proportion of motorbike riders would go in for advanced training than scooter riders.

I don't know, it just seems that people who ride scooters (generally) have a more relaxed attitude about what they are doing. Think of it as just a quick way to get around the city, low speeds therefore low risk. But coming off at 60 with no gear is still going to hurt.

There's idiots in both groups, but I would say that scooter riders regard them less, probably because they generally only see lower speeds.

It's no mystery to me why many riders take their chances with gear.  In summer, riding in leathers, gloves, boots etc on a stinking hot day is unbearable.  Not defending them but you can see why many don't bother - they've bought the dream, not the reality.   But surely it wouldn't kill them to put their headlights on.

Maybe just me - but I wouldn't bother wearing full protective gear on a scooter - the biggest risk to me on a scooter is going to be other motorists, in which case being hit by a car the damage to internal organs and spine and bones are going to be a lot more of a concern than that to my skin.  On a motorbike I'm more likely to be out enjoying the hills and proper riding rather than just commuting - and far more likely to take a silly comedy stack than on a scooter.

When's the last time you saw a scooter rider high-side it?

yeah but at least with leak proof leathers on , you won't spoil MY breakfast by spilling your blood and guts on the road in front of me...

why should I suffer at your idleness....?

yeah i can imagine how hot it could be. i think most of the guys who ride bikes with shorts/singlet are fully aware of the risks and chose to ignore them.
where as my original point was scooter riders dont wear them at all out of ignorance  :boggled:
