Scott, something has happened to that car before you bought it.IMO get rid of it before the warranty time is up and the tear up is greater then it is now.

I've been under and over that car with a fine tooth comb and I know what I am looking at. Can't see any evidence of any repair or anything out of the ordinary. It's been no drama for the last 15,000 km's and I feel like it's finally sorted.
The extended warranty runs out in another 18 months and I'll do another 30,000 km's in that time. If anything major goes wrong in that time I'll move it on.

Most of my previous beemers have been heavy on the oil, the exception was the 1m which surprisingly was good on oil; but boy could it drink fuel :)

My current f30 3 series (turbo 4 petrol engine) seems pretty good so far, although I've only done 2500kms in it.

X5s are made in the US, not sure if the M is assembled elsewhere though?

Funny you bring that up
E46 M3 never made it between services without a top up
Current M3 hasn't made it either.
Just went for a drive with eldest on L's in X5, stopped engine and oil low symbol came on. asked boss have you seen that oil can symbol come on recently......yes its been doing it for a couple of weeks, been meaning to ask you about that.

I wonder what BMW would say if engine popped and oil was low, don't worry they all do that !

It seems all the current BMW's use oil by design. They didn't just forget how to build an engine that doesn't use oil. I wonder why ?

Do Mercedes or Audis use oil like this ?   :scratchchin:

If the engine on your X5 popped you just know they would do their best to blame you, no point helping them along :)

All the X5's are made in the USA, including the M's. I think they even make the engines for the M5  :scratchchin:

I have an 08 C class and have not had to top up oil between service at all.
A friend of mine with a current A4 winges about having to top up the oil every 1000 or so k's though.
