Russ, if Australian Story say they are interested, you should visit the Pritchards to meet them and see if they will go through with it. I've got plenty of Qantas FF points if you need a hand with that trip which is pretty important. I think that having Australian Story on board will help get interest in the event because it somehow legitimises an out-there idea.

Here's another thought. It would be great to give the Cannonball anniversary a higher purpose than just a return to the Stuart Highway. What about turning it into a fundraising event for the Royal Flying Doctor Service? Entrants can be given the challenge of raising money through sponsorship and sticker their cars up etc. You'd need someone with event management experience on board with you to help, but this would make it easier for you to pitch the Pritchards idea to sponsors too. I'm sure the people at Central Region RFDS would help with organisation of the fundraising campaign if there was a decent $ target in it for them. NT Tourism might want to be help too if you are giving them visitor numbers and Great Southern Rail are bound to be interested - if you can guarantee the ABC cameras will be on the train too.

Hi mhh,

yes... all good points ... so the ABC is more crucial than I thought going on what you are saying.

A fundraiser on top of a fundraiser. Yep... I am now officially out of my league, and I don't suppose event coordinators work for free either.

My thoughts are that I'll keep going the way I am for now and when something comes up along these lines I'll know to jump at it.

The QANTAS Frequent Flyer points I hadn't thought of either. Imagine asking people to donate points... that would be awesome. Okay, I'll speak to the Pritchard's again and find out what this "Virgin" thing is all about.

With your thoughts to see if they are genuinely coming, they are fully committed now. Their only concern is the one I have and that's coming up with the money. If I can get $1000.00 by the 19th of October, I'll have until April to get the rest.

But I hear ya on the ABC.... There are fringe channels that may want to pick it up but I will give the ABC a week or so before I contact them via phone and see if I can get through to producer. I use to know someone that knew people in the ABC. He use to produce programs for them. It wasn't like I had his number in my phone but we use to meet in a course about every three months. I'll see what I can do there as well.

Thanks for thinking about this and offering the suggestions you are. Gets me thinking about "what else is possible"

Yes, the RFDS thing might be a bit too ambitious.  However, I pictured them handling the fundraising side without you doing it.  But I agree first things first - you need to get the Pritchards on the train.

Awesome. (Not that my work has to be knocked down but... great you can help out) I am located in the most remote capital city in the world. Perth.

Thanks for this contribution, do think you would be able to attend on the 24th of May as well?

Not so much your work, just the code holding your work together. Possibly. I'm running around Asia for a month staring this Friday, perhaps by the time I'm back your bag would've been shaken, leads fleshed and we've got a better idea if this event is a go or not.  :) 24th is a possible/probable but too far out to commit at this point.

You mentioned mailing the entrants, I'd say spend some time trying to find them online. If they've one anything interesting since there should be an article which could lead to an email address which will be a lot quicker.

Sorry Paulstar... that's what I meant... mailing = emailing... sorry about that. Yes I have emailed everyone on my email lost that is associated with the Cannonball Run in a group email.

That's how I found out Ron Conrad would be there.

I'll take you up on the offer to revamp the website. I take it your good at this sort of thing or you wouldn't have offered right?

Here from you in a month.

The picture that I have in my Avatar is a poster I have had frame for nearly 20 years in Anti-Glare Glass with all the signatures on it. If I could get $1000.00 for this (plus Postage) I'll let it go so that I can pay the Great Southern Rail deposit.

If your keen and want better pics or better still live with me in the most remote capital city in the world and can come and view it.... That would be great.

It's a definite one of a kind. I can get close up's of any signature.

How about it? I'll let it go for $1000.00.

Hi Guys,

It's been awhile. We wanted to let you know of an opportunity for a run in May 2014 from anywhere in Australia to the big rock in the middle of that same country.

We are looking for sponsorship so we sent an email to the ABC to follow the experience.

This is what I sent to the ABC.

We were only allowed to have 6 paragraphs and was told “Make us sit up and take notice, we get 1000’s of stories submitted every year”

"The Cannonball Run held in Darwin 1994 had a tragedy where 2 Japanese Dentists driving an exotic Ferrari F40 slammed into 2 officials where all in the accident died. It was the first legal Cannonball Run anywhere in the world and to this day the only legal Cannonball Run anywhere in the world.

This coming May is the 20th anniversary of the tragic event. This coming May we are inviting 100's of exotic cars that already make the pilgrimage every year from all over Australia to attend and see the human side of the event. Where they normally see a memorial for a car race, we intend to show the group of exotic car enthusiasts a memorial for human life.

This year for the first time we have the parents of one of the race officials closing the chapter that took their son away from them. Gerry & Carol Pritchard have never been to the memorial site set up to stand as a memorial for their son. This year we are raising sponsorship money to give the parents the trip of a life time from Queensland to Adelaide where they will get on the Ghan Train and arrive at the memorial site near Alice Springs. After this they'll go to their sons grave site in Darwin where 20 years ago the police allowed non registered cars on the road in order to be in the funeral procession.

The Pritchard's received little to no compensation after legal fees, and there is even talk of a politician up in the Northern Territory pushing to have the event again.

With so many questions still unanswered, we think that following the Pritchard's on their journey would make a real Australian Story, a story worth telling. The story’s got fast cars, an accident, a court case, loads of media attention, and a famous former race car driver that promoted the event and would love for story to go away.

We have picked Australia Story because we believe the ABC to have the highest amount of integrity of all the networks. You can find out more at www.cannonballrun.info The ABC even ran two shows back in 1994 on the 7.30 Report.

Please consider this story as we would love for the ABC to take this on. If not Australian Story then who... We cant think of anyone better.

Russ Tuff

As we have said in the email... we would love you all to be there and witness this with us. and we are looking for some sponsorship to get the Pritchard's there on the day. (costing are being worked out in the next day or so by their travel agent) If you know of any sponsor that may be able to help out... were listening.

I would be very interested to get your feedback, any comments, and any ideas of who to contact for sponsorship money.

We trust we'll meet as many of you as we can on the 24th of May 2014.
This is what jumped at me, apart from what amgsl55 said:

- the ABC email looks like you are offering to open up a hornets nest that can affect us (driving enthusiasts) negatively.
- why only the Pritchards - why not the family of the other Australian too?
- you have to get the Japanese families involved too

And also, why are you so involved in this? If you have not even met these people, why are you spending so much energy on them? I understand doing good deeds, but surely there are plenty of other things you can do that for, where it would be appreciated more, for example children and animals, who truly can't help themselves, rather than a couple that needs a stranger, that has never met them, to push them to visit their son's memorial and grave because they haven't managed to do so of their own accord in 20 years.
It just seems that you want this more than they do, which to me it seems strange considering you have never met them.
You make something idiotproof, they'll make a better idiot.

To your knowledge, any chance of another one anywhere else in the world?

I was the only one there getting the poster signed on the day, I can say that for sure. The drivers were blown away that someone would want their signature. A mate of mine was also but he has lost or thrown his out, he wasn't that into it.
