This isn't right.  The dealers and importers are crying because it will push their margins down and the warranty work is covered by the importer, not the dealer. 

The importer, let's say BMW Aust, MBA, PCA etc has to cover the warranty of the car.  They set the labour time a dealer can charge back to the importer for warranty work, but this labour time is always too tight and in most cases the dealer's lose money on it or break even.   Ask any SA about this.

So the issue comes when there is a recall or warranty on an imported car.  This is the responsibility of the importer and in the private import case that isn't them!  The dealer doesn't want to touch it because they have to get approval from the local agent to charge back the labour cost and get the part for free.  The importer doesn't want to cover a grey import because they didn't sell it initially so they didn't make any money on it to start with.

I agree with the Government's premise, but I would have gone the over way with it, allowed imports of vehicles once 2-3 years old, this would have supported/protected the dealer on new sales to a certain degree, but driven down prices albeit slowly as newer used cars on the market would pull down the price of locally supplied used which in turn would put pressure on new prices as people would look at buying used to save money rather than used.

As I understand it, the changes will make cars cheaper. It's good for us - the consumer. Don't worry about the dealers - they are highly skilled at making money. I'm comforted by their complaining. It tells me I'm going to give them less money, but I'm sure they will survive.

thats what interests me ,for the life of me how could a Chinese agent in those areas not be making a million a year plus each as directors.

Instead there eating into a trust account.

Triads...................108k a month? x 2 for 2 directors 216k per month?
