I can only answer the last question.  LCT is only payable on new cars (or more precisely, on cars for which LCT has not previously been paid).

Edit: Don't forget - there is also some kind of exemption or reduction for lower emission cars.

Thanks Mark. You've just made my day.

The emissions thing isn't relevant though.  :D

really? when did that start?

September or thereabouts I think..... but it is related to consumption, not emissions (although they are correlated)

From the age 28/09/08

"The Greens also claimed a victory with concessions worth $39 million agreed to by the Government two weeks ago that will see cars with a fuel efficiency of seven litres per 100 kilometres or better (and worth less than $75,000) exempt from the tax."

LCT threshold is $57,123.

It is now 33%.

And the tax is only charged on the amount over $57,123.

So if the car is $58,123 then the 33% tax is charged on the $1000 over. That is $330 in LCT.

But as Mark stated, second hand cars are N/A.

It will affect dozens - by encouraging importers to add fuel efficient luxury models not currently offered in Australia.  It is the most significant tax change in the car market since FBT because it taxes fuel consumption - something never done before.  You can expect more and more "efficiency" tax changes - probably every budget during Rudd's reign. For a glimpse of the future, see the UK car tax regime.

Was playing with an RX400h just the other day, but I just checked.

It still doesn't do under 7l/100km - It's about 8.1 by the dealer site.   :boggled:
