I thought the hatch was able to be hinged either side. At least that is what I read in some press thing this morning.

RHD opens from from the left (hinges on the right) and LHD is the opposite I think. Assuming you'd be standing on the side of the road putting stuff in. I would've thought putting things in from the rear would be easier. I wonder why the glass doesn't lift up like a normal hatchback?

If it was hinged from the rear you could only reach maybe one third of the area. Hinged from the side you can reach most if not all of it.
