Considering the 600k rebuild cost at the mclaren factory, it's probably in better condition than an untouched original

Possibly true; but the tub was damaged and repaired. Damage to a structural carbon fibre element isn't a good thing and the stigma will remain with the car, justified or not.

My guess is that he's picking top of the market, with hopes to buy this one back or another one for 1/4 of the price after the market crashes. ;)
