I think it has something to do with the statutory warranty that Vic dealers are obliged to offer. Can get messy if the car they sold on consignment i.e. they don't own, goes bang in a big way.

Ahhh, makes sense.  I assume there's something stopping a Victorian registered car being put up on consignment in NSW?

This is straight from Consumer Affairs Victoria.

Consignment selling
When a car is sold by consignment, it is sold by an agent acting on behalf of a person who is not a licensed motor car trader (LMCT).

It is against the law for a motor car trader to:

sell a motor car by consignment, or offer to sell a motor car by consignment, or
have a car in their possession with the intention of selling it by consignment.
You may face a fine of 100 penalty units, court action or both if you are an LMCT and sell a car by consignment.

The laws relating to consignment selling do not apply to cars sold at public auction.

Probably not if consignment is legal there.

NSW has consignment selling built into there version of the LMCT but it's not automatic.  You need to apply to their Consumer Affairs department to activate it, from what I am told.  There are still a few strict rules that apply though.......

Yeah, there's quite a few up here, Classic Throttle Shop is a good example.

Some have less than stellar reputations.

The 550 was bought from a mechanic in Vic...although it was never advertised, they did take a cut and we paid the mechanic not the owner directly.  The guys just called and asked if we were still interested in one, and did the deal.

Apparently "Advocaters" are exempt from all laws and a basic sense of morality  :D
