I suspect it's not a driver's car but the concept is still irresistible to me.

Go for it. We need a few in SA.

How long ago did you ask?

Didn't you put down a deposit on one?

Yes, $6K a while back.  I got an email a week ago asking me to finalise my spec.  But I want to drive it first.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. You would think that they would be bending over backwards to get people into them.

Evidently not.

During the company’s earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said, “we really are production constrained, not demand constrained.”

I can see that they are constrained by production limitations; but that being the case, why even bother with entering new markets, especially small and insignificant ones like Australia. If they are going to all the trouble and expense of establishing themselves in Australia, despite the limitations then why not look after the early adopters who are serious enough to put money down?
Weird.

Because Tesla is not a car company, its a technology company. And with tech you really don't get to try it first. In addition the real money is in the battery technology and either licensing that or opening more markets (battery packs for homes etc.). BTW: they have also decided to make their patents open to all who want to use them. A real "open source" model. @#$%^&*( brilliant, democratization of technology !!!

Need to think differently when thinking about Tesla. Other car companies are petrified of them :)
