ROAD-SAFETY experts are investigating lowering the 110km/h speed limit on regional roads after statistics that show a third of last year’s fatal crashes occurred in high-speed zones.

    The plan comes after a report claimed that reducing the 110km/h speed limit by 10km/h could save 900 people from being killed or seriously injured on the state’s roads in the next 12 years.

    The proposal comes as data from WA Police about last year’s road toll shows that:
    Male fatal victims outnumbered females three to one.
    Two-thirds of fatal crashes occurred in country areas.
    A quarter of fatal road victims were not wearing seat belts or restraints.
    Eighty-five per cent of crashes occurred on sealed and dry roads, rather than wet, unsealed stretches.

    Most fatals were in daylight hours, with one in five occurring on Saturdays;
    Office of Road Safety acting executive director Roger Farley said improved safety to crash victims in reducing speeds in 110km/h zones was considerable.

    “It’s about looking at the speed, but also the roadside treatments that go together with that to stop people hitting trees or rolling,” Mr Farley said.

    “When you get up to travel speeds of 100km/h or 110km/h, when you go off the road you are going to go off a fair distance, unless there is a barrier on the side of the road.

    “If you had a barrier that kept you going parallel with the road, we actually would reduce death and serious injury.”

That is fucking appalling :eek:

You try wearing a seatbelt when you are packed in like sardines in a car heading back to the outback settlement after a big pension day piss up in town.  It's hell I'm sure.
