I have to say the roads I drove last week were probably as good as anything in Tassie, without the pain in the neck of having to go on that bloody boat! You just have to know where to look (I didn't...but luckily the organiser did)

Although I'm not sure if any of the 'stages' were quite as long.
I love my car. Buy your own

The ferry isn't a pain. I love it.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I love it; but it is a pretty painless way to travel. Crap food and basic but clean cabins and you go to sleep and wake up at your destination.
