......... you should go for Amalfi drive which is stunning and the road kind of winds over the top of the cliffs, but again crazy busy in tourist season.

have driven this one - exceptional views. Starting around Sorrento, u appreciate the sheer cliff drops, starting from the other end-Salerno, u have the road cuttings to contend with. Consider your passenger

OP said he is going later on in the year. I highly doubt it will be affected at all by tourist traffic.

I'd go through norther Italian alps if you want any decent driving and little issue with local traffic. Oh wait.... I do... Look up south Tyrol, stay in the Italian side of the border otherwise cops will fine you for speeding in Austria. Then again who cares, rack up a list of driving offences and just leave the country.
You can say I'm wrong, but my garage doesn't agree with that statement!!!
