I have fond memories of the hay bakery, been there a few times

my missus wont fly, I now refuse to drive her across Australia in an effort to motivate her to get over her fears, but her family lives in Sydney so I made the trip a few times.

It got to the point where I once found an alternate road across the Hay plain, this was before google maps was what it is today

The route was from Booroorban through moulamein and kyalite, which then gets you to Swan Hill

my map book showed this as a sealed road, however for hundreds of km it wasnt, but the main challenge was the raised cattle grids, which was quite a challenge in my old camry, and cows all over the road!

Still it was one of the best days driving ever!

Made this drive a couple of times - once in a modified 300ZXTT and then in a 1992 Holden Barina (nee Suzuki Swift). The 300ZX exceeded the freeway 110kph limit in 2nd gear whilst the poor old Barina just made the posted limit in 5th with my right foot burried to the floor!

Almost - I was thinking of that story in Bill Bryson's book as I drove. :)

After 2 weeks in close proximity with the family, it felt great to be alone on the road with the freedom of not knowing where I'd stop for the night.

Did the same thing last Xmas.  Dropped the wife and kids in Sydney and drove back.  Nothing better than a nice long drive with no one else to worry about.  One of lifes little pleasures - that women and children will never understand.
