Looney started this topic in another thread and it is worthy of giving it a life of its own.

The bride's Fiat is the only manual left at our place. But I still like them. There's greater driving satisfaction when you change gears the old fashioned way, at least when driving at a gentler pace. So why does just about everyone buy DSG etc?

Paddles for sporty driving - eg hills - stick for GT cruising.

Not sure if this counts, but I had a 125i as a loan car on Monday with paddles.....didn't like them at all. Just left it in auto after 5 minutes using the paddles.

I love my manual & the experience it brings when driven hard, & thoroughly enjoy it in every day driving as well :drive:

A nice heel toe downshift is a very satisfying thing indeed.

I think paddles for the race track
Stick for a nice drive through the countryside
Auto if you dont like driving

and given that i care 1/100th of #uck all about track driving i guess thats why i like driving stick :D

DSG is a fantastic system, its seamless, its fast and works perfectly.  but its just like an auto box, its so good you really feel like you're just not driving anymore :(

case in point, i actually am looking for a new DD. new Polo GTi fits the bill perfectly, small 1.4l Twin Charged engine with 190hp.  perfect, except it is DSG only :(   and doesnt even have Launch Control :(

Isn't that car just a slushbox?  Paddles ain't paddles.

for me its a lot more satisfying to have to coordinate all your limbs to ensure everythings right before a corner, and that you have both hands back on the wheel in time
When driving enthusiastically it just seems more fun to have to focus on getting everything right

admittedly, I have never driven anything with paddles other than the silly switches on regular autos, having ridden in MHH's 458 in sport mode, the changes did seem satisfyingly violent, more like a manual than an auto, so the sensation of changing cogs can still be felt and just as importantly, heard, its just going to be perfect everytime
