A MOTORIST has been caught driving at night in the Territory Outback with a torch attached to his bonnet because his headlights were broken.

The 25-year-old driver was also found to be more than three times over the legal limit and there were two females and a baby in the car.

Yeah crippling the speed limits will have an effect...

When they say "the body had to be cut from the wreck" do they mean the body gets cut into pieces or the car gets cut to free the (somewhat) intact body?

NT surpasses entire 2006 road toll

NICK CALACOURAS

19Nov07

THE Territory's road toll has already exceeded the number of fatalities in 2006.

Gerard Naylor, 36, became the Territory's 45th road fatality for the year when he lost control of his car in Alice Springs on Friday night.

Opposition transport spokeswoman Fay Miller said the road toll was now six more than at the same time last year and one more than the entire year.

Transport Minister Delia Lawrie admitted the road toll was higher than last year, but said it was lower than 2005.

Ms Miller said the Territory Government promised to reduce the death toll with their road safety package, which started at the beginning of the year.

"There was no evidence that the open road speed limit was a significant factor in the Territory's high road toll," she said.

"As so many people predicted at the time, imposing an open road speed limit has failed to cut the road toll."

"The open road speed limit was just another pointless attack by the Martin Labor Government on the Territory's lifestyle," she said.

Ms Lawrie said the Government always expected the results of the road safety package would take time.

"We make no apology for trying to save lives," she said.

Ms Lawrie said one person dies on the Territory roads every week.

"The horrific trauma on Territory roads had to be addressed, and that's why we introduced a comprehensive road safety package," she said.

"It's disgraceful that the CLP consider our horrific road toll to be part of our lifestyle."

Ms Miller said the Government should have focused on seatbelts instead of imposing a 130km/h speed limit on the Stuart Highway.

15-year-old driver dies in desert crash

17 December 2007

A 15-year-old girl died today when the car she was driving rolled in the Northern Territory outback.

It is believed the girl was driving south in a Toyota Prado four-wheel-drive around 10.15am (CST) when she lost control on the Stuart Highway near Elliott, about 600km south of Darwin, police said.

The girl died at the scene while her 47-year-old female passenger was taken to the Elliott Health Clinic with non life-threatening injuries.

The death takes the Territory road toll to 55, eleven more than for the same period last year.
