There are calls for urgent action to get roaming cattle off the northern WA highways, with the Main Roads Department confirming stock have caused more than 800 accidents in the last year.

Three people have been killed in cattle-related crashes in the last five years in the Kimberley, including a 13-year-old girl who died on the highway near the town of Derby.

Greens MP Robin Chapple, who lives in Derby, said it was just a matter of time before further lives are lost.

"Look, it is urgent that we get these animals off the roads, because we just cannot wait for another death," he said.

"It's happened to me a number of times - you think the cattle are firmly fixed on either side of the road, and you approach them, and then one get spooked and belts across the road.

"It's a constant danger for people who live and travel in northern WA."

According to Main Roads' statistics, there have been 670 cattle strikes in the Pilbara in the last year, and 165 in the Kimberley.
