I need to park in Melbourne one day next week for some meetings in Southbank - about 4 hours.  Where's a safe place to park without risk of damage from the idiot parking next to me?  (I hate car parks)

Probably Crown, they should have secure spots.

+1 for Crown valet (not the punter carpark)
They tend to leave nice cars up top as well.

As mentioned - Crown, but go around the corner to the Hotel, not to the Casino. Less busy, and you slip a $50 note to the valet, and he lets you keep the keys after you park it right at the front.
You make something idiotproof, they'll make a better idiot.

You would drive him and pick him up afterwards all in the comfort of his own car.

Is there a nice car wash you could leave it with for 4 hours nearby?
