Only the person or entity that paid the import taxes etc on the ORIGINAL sale of the car can claim a credit for those taxes if the car were to be reimported at some point. Typical "double dipping" on taxes by the Australian Government

This of course means that if the car becomes worth a bazillion dollars 50 years after the first sale, the original owner is likely dead and the taxes will always have to be paid on reimportation. Hence so few of our big dollar collector cars ever come back once they leave our shores.

When I 're imported my 512 TR (with luggage), I contacted the original owner to pursue this.

I can't remember the exact specifics, but because more than X years had passed, even he couldn't get it back in tax free.
