I saw this happen and made the call to the cops. Thought it was an old GT from where i was sitting on the river bank so was suprised when i got up half hour later to see if was a terrible Italian car. He was speeding down from the city and lost control around the corner as he changed gear. i actually thought it was a Harley it was so loud. I'm really glad he crashed into the tree and not people or come flying over the river bank on top of me, i would have been mighty angry to have to put out my joint and jump in to save him.

Just had his day in court

Quote
Hey, Dad, sorry about the Ferrari

STEPHEN Retzos had the basic essentials to fulfil most young men's motoring dreams: the keys to his father's $250,000 red Ferrari and the green light to take it for a spin.

Unfortunately for the 21-year-old, former Geelong Grammar schoolboy, his dream spun off the road.

Melbourne Magistrates Court heard yesterday that the probationary driver failed to negotiate a sweeping left-hand bend on Batman Avenue about 9pm on May 3 last year.

Retzos lost control of the 2003 360 coupe at an estimated 108 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

The court was told the car struck a light pole and a tree outside the national tennis centre.

Leading Senior Constable Adrian Hale, prosecuting, said the damage was far more serious than the sprained ankle suffered by Retzos' passenger. The pole was ripped out of its concrete slab and dragged up to three metres with wires trailing along the ground.

Defence lawyer Bernie Balmer began his plea for Retzos by telling magistrate Luisa Bazzani: "It's obviously been a bad week for Ferraris, particularly at the grand prix."

Mr Balmer said Retzos' father had given the defendant his permission to drive the car, which was written off, but obviously did not envisage his young and inexperienced son would lose control of the vehicle.

Ms Bazzani, who expressed shock that Retzos' father "let him drive that car", said he "could have killed somebody".

"This is not just about speeding, it's about driving a vehicle he should not have been in," she added.

Mr Balmer said Retzos had been punished considerably for the incident, which had had a "huge impost on his family".

Retzos, of Shepparton, pleaded guilty to driving at a dangerous speed and driving a high-powered vehicle when not legally authorised.

The university student was fined $2000 without conviction and lost his licence for 14 months.
