The red Ferrari F40 was in the casino’s valet parking when it went missing about 12.30am.

A staff member reportedly gave the Ferrari to a person, who knew it wasn’t theirs, but they took the keys and drove off.

Crown spokesman Gary O'Neill said the casino was cooperating with the police investigation.

"We have handed over the CCTV footage," he said.

"The procedure at Crown is once you valet park your car you get a ticket, then when you are coming back out you have to hand over the ticket before you get the car."

Mr O'Neill said people occassionally lost their tickets.

"In those circumstances we require proof of identity and those procedures have been followed."

Mr O'Neill refused to comment on the of the staff member invovled.

The Ferrari was found about 6.30am in at a petrol station in Barry Rd in Coolaroo.

Sgt Trevor Thorn from Broadmeadows police said one man was in custody and was being questioned over the theft and police believed at least one other person was involved.

He said the Ferrari was spotted driving along the Tullamarine Fwy about 6am before uniformed officers found it at the petrol station.

"It's a car that does stand out in the crowd and obviously in Broadmeadows it did look out of place," he told 3AW

"I believe he (the alleged thief) was in the process of filling the vehicle.

"The car is being put on the back of a tilt tray to be examined forensically."

Sgt Thorn said the owner would be reunited with his car shortly.

"The owner has been notified, the vehicle is being examined and will then be returned to the owner, who I might add is very pleased we have it back in custody," he said.

"I think he would be very happy at this stage."

Earlier caller Mark told 3AW he saw the man getting into the Ferrari at Crown about 1.30am.

"Someone walked out of the casino past me and the security guard, got in and drove off," he said.

"The security guard said to me, because he only had an old tracksuit on, and he said 'you can't pick 'em can you'."

Police have arrested a man after a Crown Casino valet wrongly handed him the keys to a top-of-the-range Ferrari F430 Spider and he took it for a six-hour joyride - to Coolaroo.

The 32-year-old Broadmeadows man was reportedly wearing a flannelette shirt and tracksuit pants when a casino valet presented him with the keys to the bright red, high-performance V8 supercar about 12.30am today.

Police say the punter drove the two-door convertible north on the Tullamarine Freeway but was nabbed by police about 6.30am as he bought fuel at a service station in Barry Road, Coolaroo, on Melbourne's outer northern edge.

A PROFESSIONAL poker player’s luck took a bad turn last night when his $450,000 Ferrari was stolen from outside Crown Casino.

Millionaire punter Van Marcus, who has won more than $1 million at the poker table, discovered his Ferrari missing after a valet accidentally handed the keys to his sports supercar to a man in a tracksuit.

In a Facebook message today, Marcus quipped: "Well at least I hold the record for the first Ferrari ever stolen in Australia … right outside Crown Casino."

Marcus is a well-known face at the Casino, and lives close to the gambling venue.

Among his recent winnings include $278,000 in Las Vegas at the World Series last year.

Marcus moved to Australia from Iraq in 1995.

Police today charged a 32-year-old Broadmeadows man with one count of theft of a motor vehicle.

He will appear in a Melbourne court later today.

The drama unfolded about 12.30am when the red Ferrari F430 was brought up from the casino's valet parking.

A staff member reportedly gave the Ferrari to the man, who knew it wasn’t theirs, but they allegedly took the keys and drove off.

Mr O'Neill refused to comment on the staff member involved.

The Ferrari was found about 6.30am in at a petrol station in Barry Rd in Coolaroo.

Sgt Trevor Thorn from Broadmeadows police said the man was arrested nearby a short time after.

He said police believed at least one other person was involved.

He said the Ferrari was spotted driving along the Tullamarine Fwy about 6am before uniformed officers found it at the petrol station.

"It's a car that does stand out in the crowd and obviously in Broadmeadows it did look out of place," he told 3AW
