Ferrari thief jailed four months

A MAN who stole a $355,000 red Ferrari from Melbourne's Crown Casino has been jailed for four months.

Adam Ramsay, 32, of Flemington spotted the Ferrari F430 Spider in the casino's valet parking about 1.30am on May 14 and asked the attendants for the keys.

He was handed the keys to the car after providing his name and address details.

Ramsay drove the car to Broadmeadows in the city's north and was arrested by police when he stopped to fill the car up with petrol.

Ramsay's lawyer George Douglas told the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today the joyride was unplanned.

"It wasn't planned, it was dumb," he said.

"It was an impulse thing."

He said when Ramsay took the car he didn't know what to do or where to go.

The father-of-two decided he wanted to see his children, but had some time to kill, as it was still early morning.

But the red Ferrari, which was later reported missing by its owner, poker millionaire Van Marcus, stood out in the northern suburb.

"There aren't too many red Ferraris in Broadmeadows," said Mr Douglas, who has an office in the suburb.

Ramsay will serve the four-month jail term concurrently with a 35-month sentence he is serving for other matters.

Chief Magistrate Ian Gray said the crime was "bizarre" but not significant enough to warrant a tougher sentence.

"I accept that this was a spontaneous act," he said.

"There are no aggravating circumstances of this crime which call for an additional period (of imprisonment) to be served," he said.

Interesting how two different agencies report it.

No jail for Flemington Ferrari thief Adam Ramsay

A man who stole a $355,000 Ferrari after a Crown Casino valet handed him the keys has avoided jail time.

Adam Ramsay, 32, said he simply asked for the keys and drove off after showing his driver’s licence in May of this year.

His lawyer says he was bound to be caught since "there aren't too many red Ferrraris in Broadmeadows".

Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard he was returning to his own car at about 1.30am when he saw the red sports car and was allowed to drive off without a ticket.

Chief Magistrate Ian Gray said it was bizarre circumstances for a theft.

“Somebody’s been far too slack in their duties at the casino,” Mr Gray said.

The court heard Ramsay was caught several hours later filling up at a petrol station in Broadmeadows.

He had just reported to police on bail.

Defence lawyer George Douglas said Ramsay was conspicuous and bound to be caught.

“There aren’t too many red Ferraris in Broadmeadows.”

He said his client had just been sentenced to 35 months in prison over a Romanian credit card scam and had been on bail over those offences at the time of the theft.

He urged the magistrate not to add to his client’s jail time.

Mr Gray agreed he should not spend extra time in prison, saying Ramsay had pleaded guilty as early as possible.

He imposed a four-month jail time but made it concurrent with the sentence already being served.

Ramsay, of Flemington, pleaded guilty to theft of a motor vehicle.
