A customer collected his 355 today.

He arrived to collect the car in a Toyota.

The Toyota almost failed to start when leaving, due to a fuelling fault I think..

On the way home, the Toyota transmission failed, rendering the car motionless and needing a tow truck.

They took it to the customers factory, where his OTHER 355 (that I also fettle) was ready and waiting to save the day and get them both home.

Two 355s >  one Toyota

Yep. Took ages. Apparently 308QVs take at least 4 years for the same job, and that's about half the book time a 355 is !
You saw it? Cool. Any oil leaks?

I don't understand the 308QV reference.

I hope there were no oil leaks..hopefully you learnt that lesson 11 years ago.

Carl would have exhausted his extensive vocabulary on a 355 I have in this week.

Customer took it elsewhere initially... Symptoms were slow down light on, loss of power. Elsewhere had a look, charged some time, gave it back "no fault"... Then same symptoms returned this time eventuating in loss of drive completely, then failure to even start..

"elsewhere" diagnosed a starter motor fault, overhauled it. This yielded still no start. Not sure of the rest, but not satisfied bottom line, so owner sought me out through the grapevine.

This bloody one tested even my patience and "passione"....

In order...

Shaft between crankshaft and flywheel was broken. Can't explain why, just was. Starter working perfectly, but not turning the engine, only the flywheel!

"Slow down" is usually one of the three thermocouples on a 355 (5.2).... This is where it got fun.....

One control unit of the three was faulty (very common and I'd pre diagnosed this over the phone)... And one of the 4 o2 sensors was faulty.... The diagnostic tool showed which ones, so I swapped them with test parts I have.... Weird.... Fault remained....

Look deeper, suspecting wiring fault or something..... Nope, all checked out....

Except I find the check engine light is not working at all, been removed due to after market exhaust I suspect....

Hmmmm...... So I did some cross bank swaps.... Ah ha! Bloody car is wired backwards.... Diagnostic says left... Actually is the right!... Never had that before...

But it gets better, it still had a thermocouple problem even after getting the left's and rights re jigged.....

So, more testing and swappery..... An intermittent fault on one of the actual thermocouple sensors rather than the control unit. Of course, anytime I touched or moved it, it would work for a while, then drop out...

Sheesh... Bloody 355s......

I've spent 6 hours simply using the diagnostic tool and chasing/fixing fault. Still need to install the three new parts it needs, it'll be a 9 hour job once buttoned up for delivery....

I can hear Carl.... KKK FFFF URGGHH hate these things! Gimme carbs and points!

Thank the Lord PP sold that 355, now I'll never see one AGAIN.  Phew OHOS.

But that failure is bizarre.  I wonder if a few hard starts contributed?
