I heard that the Cali was designed as a Masarati, but due to development costs they had to badge it a Ferrari to make money on it.

Anyone know if this is true?

After driving a couple of current Maseratis, I'd say it almost certainly isn't true. The Masers I've driven felt a lot different to a Ferrari - and not in a good way.

I know what you mean, but having said that I can see how it is plausible. Do remember that the  maserati 4200gt was the testing ground for the f430, and they drive nothing alike. It is obvious the calli wasn't meant to be a Ferrari at first, but they definitely did more than just rebadge it as a Ferrari.
You can say I'm wrong, but my garage doesn't agree with that statement!!!

Obvious to you maybe, but it isn't obvious to me.

Nor me.

What obvious thing are MHH and I missing?

the look, shape and concept of the calli yells Maserati to me, be it more agile and more agressive than a Maserati but that isn't hard to do as Maserati engines are always fairly underated compared to the power they could be making.... It surely doesn't follow the traditional Ferrari concept, it caters for the market that Maserati has traditionally had. Also how Maserati and Ferrari are basically the same company using the same technology, parts and people.

Maserati has catered for the more luxury/everyday market than pure performance , now the california is attempting to do that although it combines performance as well.

Pretty sure Maserari is run by alfa romeo now, not Ferrari.

I see the California as a modern day Mondial cabriolet, only prettier.

Same purpose, (light duty, family orientated) and they'll depreciate so much they'll be absolute bargains in the near future... just like Mondials, only prettier.

Did I say that part about being prettier yet?
