Sooner or later owners of the older ferraris from the 70's and 80's will have a melt down....

The fuse boxes are a poor design and this is compounded by even poorer choice of materials.

Luckily, several people have come up with fixes, patches and replacements to get you through it.

Widely considered the best are the "birdman" fuse boxes from the US.

Read this, it's great and I can't fault anything about it really, other than a slightly messy appearance of installed product and the fact it uses the tube fuses, and his own admission that you can't use the original covers with labelling on again..

http://www.birdmanferrari.com/fusebox_upgrade.htm

edit for peepee peace of mind.... I've fitted a number of Birdman fuse boxes over the years and other than a few problems with the fuse themselves, have not had any problem with them and still highly recommend them to anyone considering a great value and great quality option.

I'm not a fan of the tube fuse, or glass fuse. I've found on a number of occasions that the fuse can fail in an end and not be easily seen. Of course diagnosis is easy but the failure itself is often unexplained. So I've grown, through experience, to not trust tube fuses.

So I decided to make my own fuse boxes, using the easily available, cheap and reliable blade fuse.

I even managed to get the original fuse box lids to go back on to the replaced fusebox so that everything is still labelled correctly and looks original.

I've done a few 308s already but keep forgetting to, or not having opportunity to take a pic.

But today I did a 512BB, I've only done the left side fusebox, but despite it still being slightly messy for my liking, I think it came out near perfectly for an old fuss pot like me...

No, and I'm not selling these to ANYONE that isn't ALREADY a customer.

And I'm not selling them to anyone to install themselves either.

And unless they ask YOU who made them, I don't want anyone else to tell anyone about it.

This is for the benefit of any reader and owner of a car applicable.

If they want one, go see an autolec. This can be done by any decent autolec. The base fusebox is a generic item that had been modified to suit the application.

And this is all my own work, no subcontractors have been harmed or even used in the making of this post

Terrible fuse boxes in those old shitters. Looks like a nice reliable conversion and it's a big plus that you can replace the original fuse box covers. Never liked the fact that you had to ditch them on the birdyman deal.

Isn't there an issue with the relays on these old clunkers as well ?

The steel case relays aren't available but there's perfectly good plastic case versions. And I use resistor shunted relays which reduce arcing during switching and dramatically increase reliability and function.

There is one relay thats hard to get and I think may even be nla but I've always managed to workaround.

Bloody old cars, you're constantly chasing something on them. You let 'em sit around and they deteriorate. You drive them and something breaks. Can't win :(

Haven't had a problem with mine, and that's probably less than a lot of people with new cars.

I just checked my car.....it has exactly this system. Looks like the original, but has those modern plastic fuses with the two prongs.

Another Miles Sandy bonus maybe? I don't know who did it or when, actually.
