so, if you crash your car into a river, it's insured, but if the river crashes into you, you're fucked?

what bollox.

Most of them take every measure to avoid having to make a payout.
All due to the legislation - or lack thereof.

I remember looking at a case a while back while studying a law subject. Some guy had a multi-million dollar insurance policy, and the insurance company refused to pay out. So guy took it to court and court said it was never valid from the beginning due to some wording in the contract. BUT here's the twist, the insurance company knew that it was an invalid contract and that they would NEVER have to pay him out, but were happy to keep taking premiums from the guy. Guess what happened, court made the bastards pay him out for that very reason :P

I'm gunna dig my policy out and check a few things..

from my POV, when I ask an insurer to cover me, I ALWAYS request a visit from a rep... and in my head I guess, I expect them to know where I am and assess my risks..

I want coverage to protect me from any kind of accident/problem OTHER than my own stupidity (no-one could cover that ;) )

should have clarified, that's business, building and contents cover.
Cars are covered under a general storm damage.

Well, if a person doesn't like the policy, he doesn't have to buy it.  Allowing claims for uninsured events wouldn't make sense.

I don't envy RS at the moment - there's bound to be a lot of grief that can't be resolved.

We have people doing 16 hour days, i was roped in as 2/3rd of our staff (claims and general insurance) are located in the Brisbane CBD, so we are left with 1/3 staff and having almost 4x inquiries, most of which are people panicking in other states about if they are covered by flood.

Most of the people really effected haven't started to call yet as there is more important issues like safety ect prior to lodging claims.

I'm not going to get into debates around payouts ect at this stage

speaking of which, is there an online geo map thingy, where I can see contour lines etc, to work out for myself my own flood risk ????

Google maps don't do contours??

Google maps has contour data, select the terrain layer.
