Ok what about the latest stupid idea to come from Dick Smith in the last few years???? He may have done more good for Australia than anyone else, but I think he is just talking to put his name back in the public eye these days.

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8230936/dick-smith-calls-for-two-child-policy

How is population growth in Australia going to put pressure on us? What he should be saying is limiting the overseas buyers (mainly China) to stop buying all of our better farmland and then sending the produce from those farms straight to China to feed their crazy population. Also these overseas investors are the ones generally pushing housing prices up in the major cities.

I have been scouting around for years now always looking for realestate investments, find a property being sold by a bank, valued at for arguments sake $1mil, bank is happy to get $700ish because that is what it owes them. Goes to auction and there are 3 or 4 chinese buyers that throw money, fighting for it, house is valued at $1mil and sells for $1.8???? GTFO

This is where most of our realestate price problems come from, artificially inflating the prices. The Chineese investors are loaded more than the whole of NSW or Victorias economy and they are competing for the same property locals are trying to buy. No wonder welfare has risen for public houses, no wonder record property repo's are being re-written every month.

Also we are a developed country that is about to hit an imbalance of more older people than younger people, we need as many migrants and young people as we can get from an economists viewpoint.

End of rant lol

It would put pressure no the current sort of lifestyle that Aus offers no doubt, but there are many countries with much higher density of population / area who are out there doing fine.

Chinese buyers pushing up the price of property, yeah its true. This is all cheap to them, don't get mad ;) get even. New apartments in Bangkok can be had for less than $100k. India does not allow anyone except Indian citizens to buy agricultural land, its a smart policy. Even me with an overseas citizen of India visa can-not. Keeps the crops and the profits in the country *thumbsup

Dont get sucked in by that BS.

Thank God Dick Smith has spoken up on the overpopulation of Australia. Dont get sucked in by do gooders with their cons trying to flood this country and over populate it more... if you want more crime, more people on welfare, more water shortages and more power failures support the ongoing immigration of unskilled workers that is really happening.

Dick isnt being racist, he deals with facts. Increased unskilled immigration effects the lifestyle of all the people that are already here. Most of the new Immigrants in this country are either on welfare or coming thru the back door as students and then staying to become taxi drivers and fast food outlet employees. Havent you wondered why so many taxi drivers dont speak very good English and where they are coming from? Theyre your skilled immigrants. If they dont find work in the area in which they studied, why arent they going home? Coming here to study they are supposed to be going home after they finished their studies, who actually brought in a policy that allows them to stay? All the boat people that pay $10k to get here are sucked in, no wonder they are angry, they only had to spend $8k to come here as a student and they never would have ended up in a camp.

We are already overpopulated for the resources in this country. Just because other countries are getting by with their over population is no reason we should head in that direction. Tell the people in the slums in India that they are doing fine, they'll love you for it.

Can't get even, I own part of a Chinese factory, but even then it is only a 99 year lease hold on the land and you have to be a Chineese born citizen to do it. I'm not Chinese hense I can only part own it.

We never said Dick is being racist, he is far from a racist. We are not over populated for the resources lol. We are getting bought out of our own resources which will in the future give us a false reading of not having enough resources. What has this got to do with boat people???? lol

Our capital cities are still far from being over populated let alone the country, people mistake road congestion with over population when really it is a failure of infrastructure and urban sprawl that makes it feel congested. All of our population concerns stem from poor planning from past govenrments and most probably future governments. Even during times of drought the country has more than enough water, the only problem is it isn't managed properly and probably won't be managed properly untill really tough times come. Fancy a population of 25million people not being able to survive in Australia lol.

Dick bassed his remark over nothing, no research and no evidence. Telling people not to have more than 2 kids is stupid, as of the 2006 census couples were only having an average of 2.16 kids anyway and this figure is reducing every census and has been reducing since world war 2. Of these 2.16 how many of these kids make it to reproductive age? How many of these kids will turn out gay and don't want kids in the first place? A couple having 2 kids in a lifetime will severly reduce our population, these effects are already being felt with such a huge increase of health care expenses and with such a small working population to carry the burden.

The only thing that will be a problem is if it stops raining and water is scarce we are fkd, if that happens we won't be affected as much as the other huge population centres around the world. Who knows if that is what is going to happen, what we do know is humans adapt, we have done it before and we will do it agian. We just might have to trade in our exotics to pay for water lol

Couple of quotes from one submission to the Standing Committee on Ageing in 2002, the situation has gotten worse since then.
http://www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/ageing/strategies/subs/sub55.pdf

Does Australia have the resources to sustain a population of this size? There is a large
and growing body of scientific evidence to support a view that, on the basis of our
present way of life, Australia is already overpopulated.
We live in a land of naturally poor soils, which have been further degraded through
ignorance and over-exploitation. One of these problems alone - increasing salinity,
particularly in Western Australia and the Murray Darling basin - provides a major
threat to the productivity of much of the country’s agricultural lands and to regional
social assets such as roads and buildings.
In Perth, the level of the aquifer which supplies much
of its water is sinking at an alarming rate, and a recent study has found that Perth will
run out of sustainable natural water resources by 2015 if nothing is done to slow
usage rates.

Bringing in more people to Australia is up there with bringing in Cane Toads to Qld and adding Carp to our river systems.
Why make the problem worse and say "But yeah, we adapted in the past, we'll adapt again". Why not slow the problem before it happens?
