I am about to buy a sat nav that can be moved between a few cars, hoping to get some advice on which portable units are being used out there by everyone, & what they think of them.

i have a MIO 310 i think it is... really good, has so much info on it, places of interest etc... and is pretty easy to use.

that said i havnt used any others, so cant compare. but im happy with it. (about 3 years old)

oh also one thing i found odd in my gps is that it has all the car dealerships saved in the POI

i've used plenty. they all have plusses and minusses.

as long as it has a touch screen and a nice fast chip, you can't go wrong really.

have a play in the shop and see if you like the menus on them.

i now use my mobile as a GPS...very handy as it's always with me.

On those i've tried Mio, TomTom and CoPilot....again...good and bad points.

I love my car. Buy your own

This interests me too....

what about Garmin range?

also, Aldi have a povvo spec one for $120... LOOKS like it does the same shit, but surely it has to have a catch?

Can you set up an AVOID LOW BRIDGE reference pointer.... my truck is 4.2M high?

What about buying a used one on ebay etc... do they go wrong after a while? whats to look for?

I've got a tomtom One and I'm very happy with it.  I've used it in Oz, USA and Europe and found it 99% reliable and easy to use.

what are the ongoing/hidden costs like, once purchsed.... do you have to upgrade often, and how much is it to do that...

Good point.  If you intend to use them in different countries, your map purchases can add up.  Otherwise, nothing.  The SD cards containing the maps are easily copied so it is just a matter of sharing with friends.

It appears that buying one in the UK which includes europe, and putting on oz maps works out cheaper than buying an Oz one, and putting in europe and oz.

I prefer to pick up hitch hikers in the truck anyway. but watch out for the swiss. swedish are fine, but don't trust the swiss. :tilt:

Whatever u do don't trust the LP640 gps - their ad campaign of "buy a $700k gps - get a free car" is a crock of shit!

The car's ok tho, I'd probly keep that bit.
