surely, SURELY anyone with serious investment in a website would have a back up...

come on, anyone STUPID enough to "have their lifes work" in a website without backup, deserves to lose it.

No sympathy from me.

Put your eggs in one basket at your peril, in ANYTHING (except marriage  :scared: )

sounds like global warming is to blame

You expect that security from your web host.

And people often pay experts extra for that backup service, which is seldom tested or verified.

Blaming average people who are already likely at the edge of their comfort zone trying to do business on the web, and who outsource 'non core' to people who were allegedly experts in the field is harsh.
C'mon, do it!

I agree with everyone questioning the lack of backups

Its not hard to backup your databases and mirror your content
if you were running anything important and not doing regular rsyncs, then its hard to have sympathy, especially now that theres cheap cloud hosting places to do your rsyncs to

a few years back I had stuff hosted at a place called foonet, the FBI just turned up with trucks and took the entire data centre away for analysis, which took 6 months
of course foonet went broke in the interim, or possibly they went to jail
as far as I know, no one got their data back

I remember well one time with Commercialrealestate.com.au my programmer rang me one evening and in a trembling voice told me he had deleted the entire database of over 30,000 listings.

I rang Web Central, they brought a tech in immediately and restored from backup within a couple of hours, not many listings lost and all was well.

If Id been with anyone less I would have been out of business.
