Anyone use/recommend a sniping tool/software package are they worth the hassle or just bid high and hope for the best.

Any suggestions would be good.

Never bid on an eBay auction without using sniping software. It's just an invitation for the seller to get his mates to put in donkey bids and drive up the price.
Just set your maximum price that you are prepared to pay for the item and you're done. Your bids will be lodged at the last possible moments of the auction, starting at the last price bid by another punter. You can set your bid increments and time intervals between bids. It won't stop you being outbid; but it will stop you getting sucker punched into paying too much.

Yes they could, it's a question of not being stupid about trying to bid it up too far. If they were to win the seller just relists the item claiming that the "winner" flaked out on payment forcing him to relist the item again.

I've used www.auctionstealer.com in the past, always been good.

I think it's free up to so many seconds before the auction ends.  Good enough for me :)

Free snipes 10 seconds before the end which in some cases is not good enough.

If you pay a small fee it snipes within 1 second of the end which is a lot better, never missed an auction with the paid snipes but missed heaps with the free snipes........
