I was going by a google search on the Motorola bag phones because I thought they were the first mobile phone in Australia but I was way off.  Wiki says they were made from 1990 to 2000 and the google search I did for them in Australia came up with 1994. So I screwed up royally on the start date just by thinking the bag phones were the first.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola_Bag_Phone

Researched a bit harder when I got home.

The first ever mobile call was made in August 1981 from a car phone like in Aircons pic.

First ever portable mobile call was February 23 1987.
