Has anyone ever actually bothered to use the voice commands on either? Mine has sucked ass the whole time, I wish I knew how to disable it because at least 5 times a day I start it up accidentally (double-tap on the home button) and it suggests I call my "fiance" Lulu. (I'm engaged to a friend's dog on Facebook)

Here's the latest vid comparison of the upcoming 4.1 Jellybean vs Siri.

Siri and similar technologies will not catch on because
- the phone can't recognize YOUR voice, and so you either need to keep your phone unlocked or touch it in some way, which defeats the purpose
- the voice recognition itself is poor 'did you mean...'
- you can text in a meeting, the cinema, surreptitiously...you can't whisper to Siri

About the only way I can see it working is if
- your phone bluetooths to your car/other secure space
- that auto unlocks phone
- then you can use voice control

The recognition would still have to improve greatly before it was actually useful. Having built in broadband in cars would be a good help - thinking 3/4g with bigger antenna. Could replace those fucking useless manufacturers head units that do nothing but get SAFM and play CDs I don't have.

I'll test the voice recognition of my phone by saying everything you've written above...

Edit: edited above for punctuation, but otherwise that's exactly how it came out - not bad for the most part actually, love how it even censored me. :D

I tried using Siri in the car. The ambient noise meant it could send a legible text. Also, since the iOS 5 update, it no longer deigns to Bluetooth pair to the car. This means that I have to
- unlock phone manually
- mute stereo
- talk to phone
- listen for about 3 goes while it gets it right
- authorize sending of mangled message

I didn't try again.

Siri is an experiment at present , voice recognition technology will be used extensively down the track when they identify a proper non novelty use for it and the technology improves ...a lot.....

I was using it 20 years ago, I set up my computer to do voice activated stuff back in school - it was hilarious some of the shit it would misinterpret.

It hasn't really improved much in that time.
