Finally decided I need to upgrade, my current computer was bought for me by work in 2004, it's been a pretty faithful servant, but is seriously ready for retirement - considering my phone renders stuff faster than it.

Anyhoo, this means it's been over a decade since I savvied up on hardware/software knowledge - what's out there that I need to take note of?

My needs: 90% used for web browsing and design etc, some multimedia (porn etc), photo editing, and really that's about it. I'm guessing it's likely to be a laptop, so I want it to be able to easily use my LG Flatron (W2252TQ) for pushing out the image most of the time, so the screen doesn't need to be uber awesome.

I'm assuming I could probably just turn up to JB's with $700 bucks and point at something and it would be better than what I'm running now yeah?

If you want portable, the new range of ultrabooks are great but start at 999 and go to 1999 for the top of range.
1.2kg, 8hr battery, solid state hdd, so pretty quick.

Otherwise in your standard 15" laptop range, $700 will get you something decent.

i5 processor
4gb of ram
500gb hdd

Fairly standard machine and can be had for under 600

Yes. There's plenty around sub $700 that'll be better than what you got. A grand gets you shiny stuff.
C'mon, do it!

Do you even need a DVD player anymore?

get whatever, you dont play games on it I dont think

make sure it has an hdmi out, most do, so you can plug it into your tv
a bigger battery is better if you want to sit outside and use it or take it to wine tasting or nude steak nights

I tend to wear keyboards out on any model laptop before anything else dies

the only other consideration for me is that it has a usb port on the left and the right, cause I prefer to mouse left handed most of the time, but if others use my computer they need right handed

just make sure you also get 2 external hard drives to back up your media and keep one of them offsite and swap them over periodically

Iím in the same boat at the moment. I want a computer upgrade as mine is starting to be pretty slow, especially with photo editing and opening/browsing larger photo files.

The smart thing for me to do is get a laptop, but theyíre not as powerful as a desktop, right? The laptop would be handy as I need to upload photos on the spot for some jobs (though not too often). The only thing is that I really donít like working on a laptop so I probably prefer to get a new desktop instead and use the mrsí slow laptop when necessary.

Would it be best to get a desktop put together or buy a ready-made one?

ready made vs made to order

these days much the same
used to be a much bigger difference as the gateway/dell/emachines of the world were terrible

however with the rise of console based gaming, the general demise of desktops in favour of laptops and even tablets, the difference is much less

I also prefer a desktop, installed in an ergonomic condition, with the correct lighting, screen height, speakers etc. But this is very old fashioned!

Specific advise for you - for photo editing make sure you get a solid state drive (SSD) and at least 8GB of RAM. Which means you need 64 bit windows, but thats almost a given these days.
You can probably spec an SSD at dell.com.au, they are small, 128GB is the most common size, so you will want a second 2TB normal drive for general storage and to use the SSD as your working drive.

This will make the biggest difference by far to your photo editing experience

Went to Hardly Normals, guy showed me around the computers, talked up the i7 thing for $1300+ I think, I said it would mostly be a replacement for a desktop and 90% of the time just web dev stuff, he seemed uninterested and left.

Went to JB's, they had the i7 just-superceded model there for just under $1k, but having a Samsung sale at the mo it was 20% off so came out to $780 bucks, so bought that.

300V5A for those playing at home. Didn't do any homework so unsure if it's a reasonable deal, seems like it, dunno.
