Is it better to get a local 'travel' sim card on pre pay or get a pre pay sim card whilst over seas?
Heading to Europe and mainly concerned with Data usage more than calls / txt

depends how long you away for, but if a while, just get a local sim.

I just finished arranging mine. Crazy johns... 15 minutes on phone.... it cost $9.50 per minute to call/receive AU from italy, and 85c per sms.

free to receive sms.

Everyone knows that.  The question is can you get data roaming on a local sim for sensible money.

no

Get a local prepaid sim with data plan for mobility ( I usually have a separate unlocked phone for that)

For long phone calls back home put some money into skype so you can call anyone on their landline or mobile.

Sorry, I'm slow. You say no, but then say you can get a local SIM for data?

I have had good success with a European pre paid vodafone sim. I stick in my second iPhone and tether my devices to it.

Don't know any local carriers that offer what I would consider a remotely normal data rate for roaming.

Same goes for US, I use a prepaid AT&T when there.

Hitting the US next year and planned on just getting a pre paid over there, Next month traveling around to a few countries in Europe / UK either way if i get one here or over there there will be an element of international roaming. Spending about 50% of the time in the UK and 50% traveling so might be best to get a UK one to cover my time there.
