makes you wonder if when it large stores and you hear 'security to section xxxx' is it just a hoax to make the customers think you are being watched.

If you stand there long enough, you'll probably hear it on loop... Especially when there are no security guards

A friend works in a national auto parts store and the security to section message is recorded and comes on every 15 minutes as part of the store music sound track.

When I was involved in Retail, the amount of 5 finger discounting was outrageous.
And there is not really a lot you can do about it. We had cameras and it still didn't deter them.
Different circumstances I know.....

When we get an incident we go back through the footage and print off photos that are then pinned to the wall of c**** in the staff room.
Helps the staff identify them when they come back, and they ALWAYS come back. If I am particularly pissed off I send the photos to other businesses in town.
Nine times out of ten they also have a script as drug seeking seems to go hand in hand with theft. We then make notes in their computer profiles, again to identify them when they come back.

They are sitting there in David jones watching the live feeds.
I did some work there when they opened the city store and even back then they could zoom into ant product and read the price.

The big department stores have full time security staff monitoring the cameras and plain clothes staff wandering around the store observing. The cost is beyond small business of course.
In the past I have used plain clothes detection specialists with great results; but it's far too expensive to do on a regular basis.

Had a bottle shop next door to us for a while.  they always had break ins despite their extreme security measures -bollards, security shutters, mesh over windows etc.  Just to show how stupid some are, one of their break-ins was caught on CCTV.  Happened to be a regular customer that lived across the road

It's now a pharmacy, they got broken into a few months ago by peeling off the tin on the roof.

I remember when they introduced surveillance to Rundle Mall there was some controversy about the operators zooming in on boobs and stuff? :p

The Bottle shop I ran a while ago was in a tin shed basically, the Smoke counter used to be against one of the outside walls. The buggers peeled off the tin to get into the smokes but got a little surprise from two dobermans sitting just inside......the video footage was hilarious.  :D
