Just heard that on landing they only had 40 seconds of fuel left so they only had one attempt at landing otherwise they would have crashed.

They didn't mention the fuel requirements for leaving.
no it was 40 secs till the abort point...ie with enough fuel for a reburn to meet the lunar orbiter.

This and the manual heroics of the Apollo 13 recovery shows just how frontier space exploration was back in that day. It is a pity that manned space flight really has not progressed in 40yrs. It was expected to have completed a mission to Mars by the year 2000 but the end of the cold war along with budget constraints really killed that off.
Such a brave and modest man will be missed but remembered.

RIP. What an achievement to live with and still remain a humble person.

Poor guy.... Never even got an Oscar for his efforts... :tilt:

Pretty amazing effort though. Shame he was such a reserved shy guy... Never really saw anything about him my whole life. Would have walked straight past him in the street.

I remember watching the landing on TV when I was just a young kid. Sad news but what a life.

Side by side view of Apollo 11's descent, showing the view out of the   lunar module's window side by side with the broader panorama   reconstructed from LRO data.

Armstrong was a test pilot of considerable talent. Here is a short clip of him flying and crashing the 'flying bedstead' an ungamely rocket powered lunar lander prototype.
2 secs later and he would not have made the moon shot...
