That depends. How firmly do you believe in Occam's Razor?

No but seriously, power supply problems are abundant in desktop PCs and align perfectly with the computer symptoms you have described. You can pick up a new one for as low as $15 and if the seller is nice enough, he'll even install it for you.

If you want to find the problem for sure before taking action, then there's a man in Hornsby who's the House M.D. of computer diagnosis and he won't charge for his time as long as you buy the offending part from him (he'll do all the swapping too). I can pm you his number if you like and if you mention me, he might even let you take pictures of his Toyota Hiace :).

I might try a new power supply.

As I've got two left hands, how do I know which power supply to get? And is it still easy to install with two left hands?

Thanks for your help :)

PSU's are more or less standard.  If you're the slightest bit anxious about it, open up the computer case take a pic of the PSU and show it to the retailer.  Dont got to officeworks or Dick smiths -  they wont be able to help.  Go to a real computer shop.

Yay or nay? Wireless G ADSL2+ modem router:

I have an older version of this one (can't think of the modelnumber, DSL504T I think) and works alright but goes through periods every few weeks/months were it keeps losing connection and a restart is required.

Nay,

wireless G is the old original version of wireless. slow with low range by todays standards.

there has been....

G - 54mbs
n150 - 150mbs
n300 - 300mbs
n450 - 450mbs

the current top of the line router from netgear the r6300 offers from 450-1300mbs

of course your internet wont be this fast, so n150-n300 routers will be fine, however the new high end stuff has media streaming in mind. from NAS storage to tv's around the house etc...

Excellent, thanks for that Dave!

I'll be getting a new PC by November so I'd like to update the modem around the same time as well. Still have some time before I seriously start looking for one.

There's so many routers out there  :irked: What would be a recommended brand/model router?
