Was wondering why I'm getting so many hits to my excerpt of "the goodest bits" of Cannonball Run on youtube that I uploaded a couple years ago which only includes the stuff with cars in it - and occasional abuse for saying the rest of the movie is crap...

Cannonball Memories
By John Pearley Huffman - nytimes.com

Put Dom DeLuise and Burt Reynolds together on an open stretch of highway, and it almost didn’t matter that the movie around them was awful. The mix of Mr. Reynolds’s rakish glee and Mr. DeLuise’s unbridled madness was always infectious and always hip; laughing with them always felt like laughing with the two coolest kids in town. It didn’t matter that Mr. Reynolds wore a hairpiece or that Mr. DeLuise was plump.

Mr. DeLuise died on Monday in Santa Monica, Calif., after a long illness and a career that stretched over 45 years.

Of all Mr. DeLuise’s dozens of film and television roles he was never funnier than in “Cannonball Run” in 1981 and its sequel in 1984. By any measure these two Hal Needham films are garbage. Supposedly about the real-life Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Memorial Trophy Dash, neither film bothers much with the actual cross-country race. What stories they have meander incoherently, they’re swollen with nonsensical celebrity cameo appearances and even the stunts are lame. But amid all that, Mr. DeLuise appears as the deluded Victor Prinzim, who, given the slightest opportunity for heroism, becomes Captain Chaos.

It’s so overwhelmingly silly that it’s enough to forgive the rest of the movie. For young men who grew up addicted to cars during the ’80s, the only reasons to sit through the movies were seeing a Lamborghini Countach at speed, Adrienne Barbeau and Captain Chaos.

Of course, Captain Chaos wasn’t all there was to Dom DeLuise’s career. He appeared in virtually every Mel Brooks movie with particularly memorable turns as Emperor Nero in “History of the World Part I” and as the fey and frustrated musical director in “Blazing Saddles.” He was a great guest on “The Tonight Show” and a regular at the Dean Martin roasts. And his love of cooking and entertaining led him to write several cookbooks.

But for some of us, he’ll always be Captain Chaos.
