There is no 15 year rule anymore.
Any car made after Jan 1989 has to go thru the SEVS and RAWS and if it is not listed the only way to import it is as a "Personal import".
And cars made after Jan 1969 to before Jan 1989 has to be VASSed by an engineer.

Cars made between 1985 and 1989 have to comply to ADR37 "Emission controls".

Can supply more info if needed.

so if the car is a personal import is it more trouble than go through SEVS?

Same tax scheme? who then will comply the car?

Personal imports are much easier than the RAWS system but you must have owned the car overseas for more than 12 months and have used it at some time during that period(or had an overseas address) and be able to prove this to Canberra.

There is some work still involved with "compliance" but there are places around that offer services to do this, like:

http://www.cartech.com.au/page/personal_import.html

Also talk to DOTARS about any issues you have or questions. Google searching DOTARS will bring up the site.

There are some restrictions with personal imports so do your homework before going ahead with anything as if the vehicle is imported illegally it has to be exported again or destoryed!!!
