Greetings all, Hawkeye here. Long-time poster, first time reader   :D

I'm currently browsing around for a Lotus Esprit, but have yet to find anything that has moved me enough to part with the cash. Yes I realise I should probably spend the cash on a psychiatrist or Elan instead, but until then I've got a few questions for the AE denizens...

First up, this one's for Andecorp - can you please tell me the size of the wheels on your Esprit GT300 (I realise they are custom-built). Also, where did you get (or does one get) that fabulous rear wing / spoiler from (on the GT300)...?

Second Q: Does anyone know of an Esprit for sale? Must be stevens / thompson design, must have been looked after through its life, prefer black or steel-blue, not so keen on red, white or yellow would be ok, prefer sport 300 spoiler, target budget about $35K, but prepared to go higher for the right car.

Last Q for now: I'm currently based in Townsville (yeah yeah I know ). In terms of servicing, where should I go? (Brisbane? Cairns? Townsville?)

Thanks, H.

The GT300 has 325/18s on the rear. The wing was custom made by Lotus Racing for it. As were the spoilers.

$35k will get you a Stevens. It will NOT get you a Thompson, no matter how beaten up it is. For a DECENT Thompson, you need to double your budget.

From what you are describing, you want a perfect Thompson. To give you an idea, I know a perfect one and the owner knows that if he is ever deciding to sell, I have $100k waiting for him instantly. That's where you have to play if you want what you are asking for.

Thanks for the quick reply Andre (love the GT300 by the way). Yeah ideally a nice azure blue low kilometer S4S or late model V8 would be great, but I realise they're out of my price range haha! Realistically its the X180 that will probably be the go, although I did read about that yellow GT3 that sold at auction - I could up the budget to around $43K for one of those. I realise its a minefield out there, and finding a good one is a mission. At this stage I'm putting in the ground-work and treading lightly  :)

There are reasons why cheap Esprits are cheap. Once they are brought up to scratch, they cost as much as a good one.

There is only one Azure S4s in Australia and it was written off with a complete chassis bend when it rolled off a cliff when it was only 1 year old.
Some Lebanese bought it at auction, fixed it up and the car seems to be on the road now - it's current long term owner listed it in the owners' section of LotusEsprit.com.au
I wonder if he knows its TRUE history.

Andecorp is it worth him looking at the UK? Prices make it worth a look but will you find decent cars there after so many years?

Almost impossible to find decent cars there, unless you are very lucky and pay top $. Also, he can only get the very early X180's instead of the better later ones.

Because of the cheap prices in the UK anyone can afford, and as such they are driven like daily drives.  Which also means through the winter months as well.  Although the body does not rust, they are all manufactured from 'QRC'  Quick Rust Components.  They don't look pretty internally.

I noticed last month that S4 & S4s are holding their value well.  Still 15kUK for a good S4 and around 20k for the S4s.

Yeah, I'd prefer to pay more for a good one from the start, than less for a neglected one that needs the same money spent on it to bring it up to scratch

Have considered that also - there's a black Turbo S about 3/4 the way down the page on http://www.esprit4sale.co.uk/Sale/UsedCarCentre.html that on first impressions looks ideal, only trouble is its a 1991 and without a RAWS for it, it would be very expensive to import (as far as I know)

Soooo.... how about servicing? Is there anyone local-ish to Townsville that can service the car? I'm presuming Brisbane might be the best bet, if nobody at Cairns....?

Hey, got another question for y'all. Does a Lotus Elan M100 require "specialist" servicing, or seeing as how it has an Isuzu-based engine, would a normal reputable garage be ok?

Thanks, Hawk

Don't be fooled. Everything is modified by Lotus. You certainly need a specialist.
