Hi guys,

I am doing a little research into the Rover K series engine (Yes I know they are crap), however at the moment that is what I am stuck with!!

The main question I have is........ how can you tell if it is a VHPD or VVC engine? I have looked on line and there is a definite difference yet aside from the power out put nothing else is mentioned, I don't have anyone where I am versed in these cars let alone the engine, so I need to know as much info as I can.......Can anyone help?

Rover K Series VHPD or VVC Engine Specification

Lately some very useful tech wikis have been compiled online.

Hope this one is helpful…

the intake plenum looks different on the two, its the easiest way to tell.

but its actually not a bad motor, i dont really know why the basic rover has such a bad wrap.  sure the early ones had a lot of HGF,  but lets be serious, thats not a huge job even if it does happen? and of the S2 cars ive not really heard of any major problems that anyone may have had.

just my $0.02

I found out that the engine in my car is from a series 1 Elise, however the right mods have been done to stop the HGF and any overheating to it which is a good start.

It looks like the VVC as both the head cover and the manifold have plastic coverings (Aparently the VHPD has metal)
Also been told that the VVC is actually the better of the two engines so as far as a Rover goes.... YAY!?

I agree with Looney in that the Rover engine is not that bad, I drove the nuts off mine, had 130k km's before the headgasket needed doing and it was about 2k,
I'd recommend the short shift kit (http://www.eliseparts.com/products/show/12/176/eliseparts-quickshifter-kit/) and gear linkage kit too (http://www.eliseparts.com/products/show/12/174/eliseparts-gear-linkage-kit/) to improve the gear change too...

Yep, I've owned  111R (Toyota) and a Sport 111 (Rover VVC) and I'd actually say the rover car is more fun.  Bugger all difference in performance really and the rover power band is more useful on the street. The Rover also has more character and sounds awesome (for what it is) with an induction kit and decent exhaust.

I've included a pic of the VVC engine below for reference. I believe the easiest way to tell is the alloy intake manifold.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
