Ok so I have a new baby on the way (number 2) and the 911 has spiraled on the rebuild costs (classic 85 3.2)

I have an 88 Esprit sitting on my drive doing very little.

Its low mileage (under 17k from new, UK DVLA receipts from 2006 verifying this) loads of work done including new 2002 rear end (fitted in last 10 weeks) / sports exhaust, alloy header and fuel tanks, engine checked out and sorted by Stock coachworks in Essex UK prior to shipping, less than 300km since, red hose and clutch parts sorted,  Bright orange paint job isn't the best but the paintwork itself is excellent having just been sorted at a body shop. Previous owner did most of the work himself so little history but the first thing I did was send it to a specialist who gave it the all clear.

It has hardly been used in the last three years but prior to that I was using it daily in the UK, just replaced the fuel pump and fuel. Needs compliance (never got around to it after 1st baby was born), headlights are temperamental going up/ down so probably just relay, aircon compressor has seized. I reckon carpets and interior while OK are not excellent. They look like 28 year old items.

Have spare set of 17" GT3 alloys with it along with V8 gear knob, chrome switch gear, gear change upgrade kit all from PMN,  steering wheel recovered in Alacantra plus loads more. Overall it is an excellent car and I looked at plenty in the UK before buying it- it just needs love. Its also very quick compared to a lot I have driven. I have all the original parts also including the rear lights/ panel and wiring loom.

Shannons have listed it at $60k agreed value - is that about right? I know its not rego/ complianced but that wouldnt be a big job and car doesn't need much at all. Am I worth just doing the work first?

Do you have the bits to put it back to oem (or as close as you can get)? That would net you the best price.  But as is i would've thought $30k would get it sold. $40k or above would see it in your driveway for a quite a while.

Yes I have every original part but the new additions are genuine Lotus parts also so hopefully it wont of affected the value as the new parts are much better quality.

How was this imported???? PI???? what paperwork do you have with it?? So it's never been rego'ed in Australia?


From what you are saying there is quiet a few items that need to be addressed, these are all going to pull the price down.


If doing this in Vic, it will need to be VASS'ed and items identified on that will need to be addressed.


IMHO $30k will be a long shot for a car like this.

I don't think you'll get any takers until its complianced and road registered. Since its also highly modified, selling price will be much lower than a stock 88 turbo. Probably low / mid 20's for an uncomplianced car.

IMHO $30k will be a long shot for a car like this.

It is a pre-89 and all paperwork is with it along with the necessary import docs. All import taxes have been paid. I started the process to rego but never got around to finishing it. The only things identified by the Motor Vehicle registry were the brake hoses needed replacing with ones with an ADR stamp and a plate needed welding on next to the turbo. Aside from the brake lines it also complies with all ADR regulations so compliance wont be an issue. I used to ship cars etc for a living and have done maybe a dozen personal vehicles plus maybe thousands more in the course of the work.

I am in the NT which has probably the strictest regulations in Aus (about the only thing they are strict on) and it wont be much even here to do the work, just not sure I can be bothered.

I am torn between selling or completely modifying it into a track day machine. It will have to wait until the kids are older though. I am relocating to QLD next year so I might just wait and see what happens.

The responses from the guys above may sound harsh, but they know the market inside out and have no reason to lowball you.

Without a doubt, get it fully registered though - punters hate a challenge.
