Have read on another forum if the cats (being ceramic) break up, fragments may get sucked back into the engine under certain conditions - in which case not doing anything may be even more expensive

Try contacting one of the exhaust advertisers on this forum for alternate aftermarket products

Yeah, I'll make some calls re: customs exhausts and see what the feedback is. Thanks for the help from everyone so far, I'll keep you all posted with the outcome.

Really? But the cats are downwind from the engine, the exhaust would have to be sucking in air from the outside for that to happen wouldn't it?

+1 unless there is some whiz bang sensorific module embedded into the ceramic elements of the cat convertor I don't see why a custom one wouldn't do the job just as well. Or even an off the shelf one that fits in the required space. IIRC back in the day when Jap imports first started getting tuned here a cbang for buck mod was to put a GTR cat onto a non GTR skyline for more flow.

I  de-catted the cat in my skyline and now it spits flames :)

Seems the wear was only in one, but the written quote is for replacement of both ($6, 800 is the final quoted figure). I'll need to ask them some more details tomorrow. Thanks for the help so far.

WOw are you taking your car to the main dealer? Only places I knew of that replaced parts that weren't faulty or worn out are the Maserati and Ferrari dealer on Elizabeth street and Piccolo that used to be at Marrickville but I heard they closed down recently. My mechanic went and bought all their diagnosing equipment, spares, tools, lifts ect...

get a custom exhaust system done for 3k

I'd check with someone who knows a lot about the cars before getting a custom exhaust made up. I'm looking at a diagram of the standard exhaust and looks like there might be a thermocouple set and a catalyst control station (no idea what they do) that might be affected.

I'm surprised they are still using ceramic cats though.

I  de-catted the cat in my skyline and now it spits flames :)

10k EPA fine  :melting: There was a GTi back in the day that spat flames (big turbo, big intercooler) the owner made a metal plate to push the flames off the bumper because the bumper kept melting  :mischief:

All you get is a notice to attend an inspection yard, you have 2 weeks to turn up, 2 weeks is plenty to put it back to stock :)

This all came from my mechanics mouth.

 I went to Piccollo once about a year ago now but I couldn't justify sending my car there to get worked on as they charged the same as the main dealer. Probably contributed to the closure as I was going to pay the same price as the dealer, i'd rather get the dealers stamp in the service book.

Could be by now, those EPA letters are a pain but the trucks on the side of the roads were much much worse. Do they have defect stations still? this is going OT....
