Yes. Have a finny, and was looking at a Pontoon'y   :)   Thus the oddity of this thread timing!

Go for it!  Would be great to see them parked side-by-side.  And, as far as classics go, they're a wonderful car for the money... As you stated, $20k should get you a nice one, $20k+ will get you a top one. :)

My favourite of this model is definitely the 220S or 220SE coupe (W128).  It's such a beautiful car.   They start at around $40k and go up from there.  The convertibles are $100k+. I'm glad I prefer the lines of the coupe over the convertible... one of those rare times where I find the cheaper model to be more desirable (speaking for myself, of course).

Now that I'm on my lunch break, I thought I'd google some pics to show the various models I've talked about. It's also a good opportunity to use google to see whether my memory has failed me (which I think it has in parts :()

The W120/W121 were the first ponton model, and in effect the 'entry-level' model.  They were built between 1953 and 1962 as four door, four cylinder sedan.  The 190SL was built on this chassis (not the W180), hence that car's R121 model designation.  These were the four cylinder 180 and 190 ponton models.

The W180 was built between 1954 and 1959 and were six cylinder sedans, coupes and convertibles.  The 220a and 220S were the models built on the W180 platform.

The W128 was built between 1958 and 1960 and were six cylinder sedans, coupes and convertibles.  The only model offered was the 220SE ('E' in MB land meant fuel injection).

Okay, now for a rundown on the Typ 300 family which includes the W186, W188 and W189.

The W186 was built between 1951 and 1957 and was a 3.0 litre 6 cylinder (sidenote: this engine in fuel injected form (and with some other performance upgrades) was used in the 300SL gullwing and roadster).  The models offered on the W186 platform were the 300, 300b and 300c.  The body styles offered were sedan and cabriolet.

The W188 (series 1) was built between 1951 and 1958.  It was offered as a 2+2 coupe and cabriolet as a 300S.  It was the most expensive of the Typ 300 family.

The W188 (series 2) saw the adoption of the low-pivot IRS and fuel injection.  It was offered as a two door coupe or cabriolet/roadster 300Sc.

The W189 was the final member of the Typ 300 family.  It was offered as a four door sedan and cabriolet, and came without the B-pillar... in effect it was a four door coupe or cabriolet.  The only model offered was the 300d.

Pic 8 is W189 four door pillarless coupe/sedan 300d  NB. This is the car Ash has spotted... you may have to change the thread title.  Sorry... my memory wasn't as good as I thought it was.  :(
