Getting a new whiz bang handset soon (probably HTC Desire HD) and will likely buy outright, I send a reasonable amount of texts but rarely use it for voice calls, most of all I'll use it for data - emails/forums/web/apps/etc and probably tethering.

Are Telstra really a great deal better than the others?  With Virgin/Optus I find my 3G connection on the iPhone is really crap if there's more than half a dozen people in my postcode using the network, 99% of my usage will be within 2km of the CBD.
