Have you gone through some of the overseas BMW forums? Seems to me that the issue was caused by a failure (not by the driver or it was caused by the driver but it shouldn't have happened), looks like they have found a fault either during manufacturing which for some reason only showed up now or it is not the first problem of this nature they have seen on your model.

My money is on the guess that you are not alone and there would be others out there who have had the same problem.    LOL @ circles in a Diesel X5
